Scotland 2024

I traveled to Scotland with friends from the Camino to walk the West Highland Way. We started in Milngavie and planned to walk the full route, but due to injury we each had to stop walking at a certain point and bus or take a taxi to the next stage.

I walked the first two days, then completed the rest of the route by bus and taxi due to a knee injury. Andrew and Marco continued to walk until Andrew twisted his ankle. Marco could have continued walking on his own to Fort William, but he chose to enjoy the sights along the way with us.

The scenery was beautiful, especially Glencoe, which is the most beautiful nature I have experienced and I cannot wait to return. The landscape was green, open, and quiet, plus the sunset was spectacular.

Lodging ranged from hostels to small inns and very large hotels. Some were very basic, others more comfortable. King’s House in Glencoe stood out for its location, views, and luxury rooms. A bunk house was also offered for walkers, and that’s where we stayed.

While I was out of commission and the guys were still walking, I attended a gin-making class which was very fun and I look forward to doing again. The Scottish food was heavier than I prefer, and I found myself wanting more fresh vegetables and fruit. In Fort William I found a vegan café which provided the best meals of the trip outside of dinner at Kings House.

I look forward to returning to Scotland and successfully completing the WHW. While shorter in length than the Camino, the terrain is more treacherous and the weather is cooler, wetter, and subject to change at any moment making walking conditions more perilous. This is not a walk I would undertake solo.
